Tromsø Travel Guide - Best Things To Do, Northern Lights + Winter Tips
Planning a trip to Tromsø, Norway? This Tromsø travel guide covers the best things to do, how to see the Northern Lights, where to stay, and everything you need to know before visiting.
Located above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is one of the best places in the world to experience a proper winter. Think snowy landscapes, bucket list activities, and a really good chance of seeing the aurora.
I visited in March, which is still very much winter, and these are the experiences I’d genuinely recommend.
Is Tromsø Worth Visiting?
Yes, especially if seeing the Northern Lights is high on your bucket list.
Tromsø is one of the most accessible Arctic destinations, with a great mix of adventure, culture, and cosy winter vibes. It’s also surprisingly easy to get around, even without a car.
Where Is Tromsø?
Tromsø is located in northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle, making it one of the best places in Europe to see the Northern Lights.
Best Time to Visit Tromsø
Winter (November to March)
Best time to see the Northern Lights
Snowy landscapes
Full range of winter activities
March is a really good time to visit because you still get winter conditions but with slightly more daylight compared to earlier months.
Best Things To Do in Tromsø
Chase the Northern Lights
This is the main reason most people visit Tromsø and it’s 100% worth it.
I actually did two Northern Lights tours, and I’d genuinely recommend doing the same if you have the time and budget.
One smaller, more intimate tour
One bigger, more popular tour
Both were completely different experiences, and doing two gives you a much better chance of seeing the lights.
And if your budget will allow, another amazing way to see the Auroras is on a cruise (with a hot tub!)
If you only do one thing in Tromsø, make it this.
Visit a Reindeer Farm + Sleigh Ride
This was such a unique experience.
You get to feed the reindeer, learn about Sami culture, and go on a reindeer sleigh ride through the snow. It’s a really nice mix of cultural and outdoor experience.
Sauna at Pust Sauna
This is such a cool experience and something I’d definitely recommend.
It’s a floating sauna right on the water, and you can go between the hot sauna and the freezing Arctic water. It’s intense but such a fun and memorable experience.
Dog Sledding
Even though I didn’t do this myself, it’s one of the most popular things to do in Tromsø.
If you want a proper Arctic adventure, this is one of those bucket list experiences worth looking into.
Tromsø Cable Car (Fjellheisen)
The cable car takes you up above the city for incredible views and is also a popular spot for seeing the Northern Lights.
Floating in the Arctic Ocean
This was such a fun and different experience.
You basically float in the Arctic water in a full thermal suit, so you stay warm while just drifting around surrounded by snowy landscapes. It sounds a bit crazy but it’s actually so relaxing once you’re in.
Afterwards, you warm up with snacks and drinks, which makes it even better. It’s one of those experiences that feels really unique to Tromsø and something you probably wouldn’t do anywhere else.
Explore the Fjords
Fjord tours take you out into the surrounding landscapes, which are honestly some of the most beautiful in Norway.
How Many Days Do You Need in Tromsø?
3 days: Northern Lights + 1 to 2 activities
4 to 5 days: ideal for multiple tours and better chances to see the aurora
Because sightings aren’t guaranteed, having a few nights gives you a much better chance.
Where To Stay in Tromsø
City centre: best for convenience and tours
Outside the city: quieter and better for Northern Lights visibility
Most tours include pickup, so staying central is usually the easiest option.
Getting Around Tromsø
Public transport is really good
