Albania’s Hidden Gem: Why Himarë is the Perfect Backpacker Destination
A backpacker’s guide to Albania’s most underrated beach town
Looking for crystal-clear beaches, budget-friendly hostels, and a town that hasn’t been overrun by tourists? Let me introduce you to Himarë, Albania—a chilled-out coastal spot along the Albanian Riviera that just might steal your heart.
While Ksamil and Sarandë get all the hype, Himarë offers everything a backpacker could want: stunning beaches, cheap food, easy hikes, and a warm, social vibe without the crowds. I came here for a few nights and ended up staying over a week—and honestly, I could’ve kept extending.
How to Get to Himarë
From Sarandë
If you’re coming from Corfu, your easiest route is a ferry to Sarandë, followed by a direct bus to Himarë. The bus ride takes around 2 hours and runs frequently during the summer months.

From Tirana
There are daily buses from Tirana to Himarë (around 5–6 hours). They’re cheap and straightforward, just don’t expect luxury—this is Albania, after all.
By Car
Renting a car gives you full flexibility to explore hidden beaches and mountain roads at your own pace. The drives are stunning, especially along the coast between Vlorë and Himarë.

Whether you’re into hiking, swimming, or just lying on a towel with a 50-cent gelato in hand, Himarë is full of small adventures. Here are some of the best ways to spend your time.
1. Boat Trip Along the Albanian Riviera
One of the most popular things to do in Himarë is to take a day boat tour. You’ll visit hidden beaches, swim through caves, and snorkel in the clearest water you’ve ever seen. Most hostels can help you book a shared or private trip.
Common stops include: Filikuri, Gjipe, and Aquarium Beach
Morning and afternoon departures available
Bring snacks, water, and sunscreen
2. Day Trip to Gjipe Canyon and Beach
Combine a short hike with one of the most beautiful beaches in Albania. Start from the parking lot above the canyon and walk down through the gorge (around 45 minutes) to reach Gjipe Beach—a peaceful cove surrounded by cliffs.
Great for a full-day trip or overnight camping
No shops or restaurants—bring what you need
Moderate hike, decent shoes recommended
3. Cliff Jumping at Aquarium Beach
A hidden cove with crazy-clear water and perfect natural cliffs for jumping. You can reach it via boat or by hiking in from the cliffs near Livadhi (ask a local or your hostel for directions).
No facilities, so pack in and pack out
Water is deep and calm—perfect for swimming
Great GoPro/underwater photo spot
4. Chill at Livadhi Beach
Just a 30-minute walk from town, Livadhi Beach is one of the easiest to get to and has the most space to stretch out. You’ll find bars, loungers, cliff jumping spots, and plenty of room to lay out a towel.
Great for a relaxed beach day
Sunset views and cold beers
Can get busy in July/August but still manageable
5. Hike to Filikuri Beach
This remote beach is only accessible by foot or boat, which keeps the crowds away. It’s one of the quietest and most beautiful beaches I’ve ever been to—white stones, turquoise water, and total peace.
Ask your hostel for the hiking route
Bring a dry bag and solid shoes
Zero shade—go early or lateWhere to Eat and Drink in Himarë

Gyros (or “souvlaki”) for €2–3
Local bakeries with pastries and espresso

Sit-Down Restaurants
Himarë has a mix of traditional and modern spots with sea views and decent vegetarian options. Think grilled veggies, seafood, fresh salads, and big plates of pasta or risotto.
Most places accept cash only
Raki (local spirit) is strong—go slow
Vegetarian/vegan options improving every year
What’s the Vibe Like in Himarë?
Chill, welcoming, and safe. That’s the best way I can describe it.
Himarë isn’t a party town, but it’s social enough to meet people, especially if you’re staying in a hostel. I felt totally safe walking around at night, and even hitchhiked a few times without issue. It’s the kind of place where you fall into a rhythm: morning swims, gyros for lunch, beach all afternoon, and sunset beers with new friends.
If you’re solo, this is a great spot to connect with other travellers—many of whom are doing the same south-to-north Albania route.
Backpacker Travel Tips for Himarë
Bring cash – ATMs exist but often run out or charge fees
Bus schedules change – Always check at your hostel
Visit in June or September – Fewer people, great weather
Wear sturdy sandals – Especially if you’re hiking to beaches
Dry bag + snorkel mask = best beach day ever
Would I Go Back?
Absolutely. Himarë is one of those places I still think about all the time. It’s beautiful without being expensive, social without being chaotic, and adventurous without needing a tour guide. If I had more time, I’d rent a car and road trip through the rest of Albania, but even just staying put here was unforgettable.
If you're heading to Albania, don't skip Himarë.
